A man has been arrested after firing shots in the settlement of Attu early this morning, and five people were rescued on Friday in a SAR operation following a distress call to Aasiaat Radio.
This morning, police in Aasiaat arrested a man after he shot into the air in the village of Attu.
The incident was reported to the police at 5:42 a.m., and relatively quickly thereafter, the man was arrested, says duty officer Aputsiaq Hansen
– The arrest took place without drama, and we are now investigating the case.
Therefore, it is also sparse what the chief of police can say about the incident, but he emphasizes that the residents of the settlement can be completely safe.
Mayday over Aasiaat Radio
The watch commander also says that five people reported a mayday on Aasiaat Radio at 8:10 a.m. on Friday morning because their boat was taking on water when they were sailing near the village of Arsuk.
“Therefore, the police and Arctic Command launched a SAR operation, and the five people were rescued to the settlement, and all are safe,” says Aputsiaq Hansen.
We also managed to sail the boat into the settlement, says the duty officer.
Alcohol has been dominant
In addition to the two incidents, the duty manager tells of a busy 24 hours, in which there have been many alcohol-related episodes.
Everything from reports of violence, street disorder, house riots, fights and two drunk drivers.
One drunk driver was involved in a traffic accident early in the night – at 00:08 – when he crashed into a lamppost in Nuussuaq at high speed.
– The police suspect that it was a case of drunk driving, so the 20-year-old driver of the car had a blood test taken, which we are now waiting for the results, says Aputsiaq Hansen.
The man had a passenger in the car who was under 18, and the two people were taken to the emergency room after the accident. Both of them are out of danger, the chief of police says.
– I would like to encourage you to never drive under the influence, says Aputsiaq Hansen.
He also encourages parents to talk to children about not driving with someone who is drunk.
Sober in detention
The second drunk driver was seen getting into a car at 4:05 a.m. in downtown Nuuk to drive
– But the man was stopped and blew over the limit on the police breathalyzer. That’s why he has been in police custody, and we’re waiting for him to sober up so we can question him.
The police have also taken a blood sample from him, and what happens in that case depends on what the blood test shows.
– It’s the blood alcohol level and whether he has previous cases that determine what happens next in the case, so I can’t say anything about that now, says Aputsiaq Hansen.
