Three Days in Iceland: A First-Timer’s Guide to Must-See Spots

If you’re planning a short visit to Iceland, you may find the plethora of activities and tours a bit daunting. After all, one could easily spend weeks exploring this stunning island without ever running out of adventures. So how can you maximize a brief three-to-four-day stay? We’ve crafted an itinerary that offers a well-rounded experience, based out of Reykjavík and suitable for both solo travelers and families.

DAY 1: The Golden Circle Awaits

To make the most of your time, consider arriving the night before, giving you three full days to explore. Though often labeled as a tourist hotspot, the Golden Circle is a quintessential experience everyone should enjoy. Here, you’ll find breathtaking waterfalls, bubbling geysers, geothermal pools, and fascinating geological features—all just a stone’s throw from Reykjavík.

Kick off your adventure with the Golden Circle: Platinum tour. We begin our day at the Secret Lagoon, where you can soak in Iceland’s oldest hot spring, dating back to 1891. Arriving just after opening gives you a chance to relax before larger crowds descend. From there, our journey takes us to Friðheimar Tomato Greenhouse for a delicious lunch featuring fresh tomato soup and homemade bread—a delightful treat.

Post-lunch, we visit three iconic spots: the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the thrilling geysers of the Geysir geothermal area, and the serene beauty of Þingvellir National Park. Late afternoons there are particularly enchanting, as you’ll often find fewer crowds to share the experience with. You’ll return to Reykjavík just in time for dinner, your heart full of unforgettable sights.

DAY 2: Embrace the South Coast

The south coast of Iceland boasts some of the island’s most iconic landscapes: towering glaciers, mighty waterfalls, and black volcanic beaches. It’s a one-day adventure that encapsulates the natural beauty of this incredible place. On our South Coast: Fire & Ice tour, the day begins with a scenic walk that leads us to a viewpoint overlooking the impressive Sólheimajökull glacier. This isn’t just a stroll—it’s an educational experience that connects you with the natural world.

Next stop: the stunning black sands of Reynisfjara Beach. As we make our way to the charming town of Vík, prepare for something extraordinary—the world’s only indoor Lava Show, where real re-melted lava flows mere feet away (all in a safe environment, of course). But we’re not done yet! The mighty Skógafoss waterfall, with its dramatic 60-meter cascade, is calling. Our day concludes with a visit to the renowned Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can take an unforgettable walk behind the curtain of water—a favorite for many visitors.

DAY 3: A Journey to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Head northwest towards the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often regarded as a microcosm of Iceland’s dramatic landscapes. With sparkling fjords, towering sea cliffs, and glacier-capped volcanoes, this area harbors a magical charm that has inspired countless stories. Notably, the communities here were the first in Europe to earn the Green Globe certification for sustainable tourism—reflecting their commitment to preserving this breathtaking environment.

Your exploration begins at Selvallavatn, a serene spot offering breathtaking views of mountain ranges and hidden waterfalls. Next, we’ll make our way to the quaint fishing town of Stykkishólmur, where we’ll enjoy lunch at Narfeyrarstofa, renowned for its fresh, locally sourced seafood.

After fueling up, we head to Kirkjufell mountain, famous for its role in “Game of Thrones,” alongside the picturesque Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall. A visit to the enchanting black beach of Djúpalónssandur feels almost otherworldly, with its unique rock formations and hidden mineral springs. Throughout the drive, the majestic Snæfellsjökull volcano looms large, an ever-present companion on our journey. We’ll also stop by Arnarstapi, perched on dramatic cliffs teeming with birdlife, before reaching Búðarkirkja, an iconic black church surrounded by stunning scenery—a fitting backdrop to end your day as the sun dips below the horizon.

Alternatives for Adventurers: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

If your schedule permits, consider replacing the South Coast and Snæfellsnes tours with an overnight adventure to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. This captivating journey allows you to explore the entire south coast, from stunning iceberg-filled lagoons to the breathtaking Diamond Beach. You can get up close with incredible glaciers, hike in summer, or delve into ice caves during the winter months. You’ll spend the night in a cozy, secluded guesthouse, where you might even catch a glimpse of the northern lights, making this a truly unique experience.

We hope this itinerary serves as a helpful guide for your three-day excursion in Iceland. Each of these tours runs year-round, offering breathtaking sights no matter the season. Just be sure to pack warm layers, especially if you’re visiting during the colder months. Get ready to check items off your bucket list while capturing countless memories along the way.
