Military helicopters, F-16 aircraft and special forces from the Danish Armed Forces are currently in Greenland. According to experts, the Danish Armed Forces are conducting a communication campaign throughout the Kingdom. – And it is also about sending a signal across the Atlantic that Denmark is not a bad ally.

The Danish Armed Forces have stepped up their presence in Greenland, and this also applies to social media.

    The defense has stepped up

These days, it is overflowing with pictures and videos of Danish F-16 aircraft on the way to Kangerlussuaq, military helicopters over the Ice Sheet, special forces training in parachute deployment and tactical mobility from air to ground. In addition, an open ship has been held in South Greenland and a football match has been played between soldiers and locals in Nuuk.

    Increased presence

One cannot help but wonder whether the visibility is about sending a signal to the outside world, and perhaps in particular to the White House, that Denmark is of course present in Greenland and ensures safety and security throughout the Commonwealth.

The Arctic Command states that the Armed Forces generally communicate on social media about activities, exercises and the like, and that the Armed Forces’ increased presence in Greenland has meant that more communication is being made on the Armed Forces’ social media about activities in Greenland.

“In addition to telling about the presence, it is also, for example, to invite to an open ship. And to warn about visits from defense units”, writes Arctic Command to Sermitsiaq.

    Sending signal to the USA

Associate Professor at the Danish Defence Academy Peter Viggo Jakobsen has also noted the increased visibility of the Danish Defence not only in Greenland, but also in Denmark

    – During the recently held People’s Assembly on Bornholm, the Armed Forces were also much more visibly present than they have been in previous years. For example, they have not previously been allowed to stand with equipment in the harbor. They were allowed to do so this year. At the same time, both F-16 and F-35 fighter jets flew over the People’s Assembly. I believe that it is part of a general strategic communication campaign towards the population, which aims to demonstrate the importance of a defense, which is in turn linked to the government’s message of “buy, buy, buy” for the defense. – It is an attempt to make the population understand that the defense must play a greater role in society.

    – And there is no doubt that when everything that can crawl and walk within the Defense is sent to Greenland, and all the social media is used to create visibility, it is also because a signal must be sent across the Atlantic that Denmark is not a bad ally.

    Slider on the equipment

According to Peter Viggo Jakobsen, however, there are limits to how long the Danish Armed Forces can continue to have such a significant presence in Greenland.

    – They cannot continue at this level, because they simply do not have the capacity for that when you have to build up forces for NATO and other things at the same time. At the same time, it is really tiring, especially for the large transport helicopters, to fly to Greenland and back again under their own power. But right now they would like to send a clear signal. After that, it will find a more natural course, assesses Peter Viggo Jakobsen.
