Aviation fuel is increasing by 19.3 percent, and this will have consequences for both Air Greenland’s finances and passengers’ wallets. Fuel surcharges are on the way.

Fuel prices have just increased – and this also applies to the aviation fuel Jet A-1, which has increased by 1 krone to 6.18 kroner per liter.

    – Fuel is a large part of our costs, so it is clear that when fuel prices increase, customers will also pay a little more for the ticket, says Air Greenland’s director Jacob Nitter Sørensen.

The situation is particularly challenging, as a large portion of this summer’s tickets have already been sold – without the new fuel price being factored in.

    – We have already sold all the tickets for the summer, when we will pay higher fuel prices, explains Jacob Nitter Sørensen.

The problem is that the missing additional income cannot be immediately recovered – at least not from travelers who have already secured a ticket.

    – We can’t go out to customers who have already bought a ticket and say “now we just need a fuel surcharge on top of that”, so that way it hits us really hard, he says.

Instead, Air Greenland is forced to introduce a surcharge on future tickets. When this will happen is not yet clear.

    – We are looking at what the consequences are. How much it is, how to distribute it, so I can’t say that right now, says the director.

The addition will not disappear immediately

When fuel prices fall again, the surcharge will not disappear immediately. According to Air Greenland, it will take time to compensate for the losses already incurred.

    – We have to drive with the fuel allowance a little longer to catch up on what we lost at the start. That’s typically how it goes, explains Jacob Nitter Sørensen.
