Runners Set to Conquer the Polar Circle Marathon in Greenland’s Untamed Landscape

Since 2001, adventurous runners from across the globe have flocked to Greenland for a breathtaking marathon that defies the traditional asphalt routes. Here, the race unfolds against a backdrop of ice, snow, and rugged tundra—an experience distinctly different from standard marathons.

The brainchild of Albatros Travel, founded by Søren Rasmussen, the race was born out of a deep admiration for Greenland’s stark beauty. Now, race director Lars Fyhr, along with his dedicated team, is committed to ensuring that participants navigate this extraordinary course safely.

Among this year’s competitors is Felix Osmark, an experienced runner tackling his first marathon in such extreme conditions. For both participants and organizers, this event transcends the pursuit of personal bests; it’s about braving the elements and immersing oneself in the magnificent Arctic landscape.

    The Fight Against Nature

Standing at the helm, Lars Fyhr is equipped with a committed crew prepared to guide runners through one of the world’s most unique racing terrains. “This isn’t an extreme race,” he clarifies. “It’s tailored for seasoned runners—those who may have left the quest for personal records behind and are now in search of awe-inspiring natural encounters.”

And indeed, adventure is paramount. Participants traverse the Greenland ice sheet, moving through a challenging medley of ice, snow, gravel, and frozen ground. With temperatures often plunging well below freezing and Kangerlussuaq’s mercurial weather, each race day is truly unpredictable.

“We want to offer people a genuine challenge against the elements. The combination of this unforgiving landscape and the serene beauty of the ice makes this race truly distinctive,” Fyhr notes. It’s no surprise that the Arctic Circle Marathon is often dubbed the world’s coldest marathon.

A Global Gathering with Local Flavor

This year’s event features a remarkable 177 runners from 30 different nationalities, including a strong showing from Greenland itself, with 26 local participants and several Danes residing in the region. “The weather adds an unpredictable thrill,” Lars Fyhr adds. “Runners won’t know exactly what to expect until the day of the race. But one thing is certain: an unforgettable experience awaits them.”

Felix Osmark, an IT consultant from Nuuk, exemplifies the spirit of this year’s race. With a rigorous training regimen—clocking approximately 60 kilometers each week—running is far more than just a hobby for him. “I’ve completed numerous marathons in cities like Sydney and Amsterdam, but they’ve mostly been on flat pavement. This challenge—set amidst the wildness of Greenland—excites me.”

    A Dance with Nature

Felix’s impressive repertoire of marathons makes this Polar Circle Marathon particularly intriguing. He embraces the duality of challenge and beauty that the Arctic offers. “It’s not merely the unique aspects of the race that drew me in; it’s the prospect of a significant mental and physical test amidst stunning natural scenery,” he shares.

During parts of the race, runners will navigate on ice, requiring them to strap on spikes for proper footing. This starkly contrasts with the bustling atmosphere of the large urban marathons he’s accustomed to. “I expect to spend much of the journey alone. Unlike other large events, there won’t be cheering crowds along the way—it’s just me and the wilderness,” Felix reflects.

Yet, for him, this solitude is part of the allure. “The challenge is significant, but I am committed to appreciating the journey along the way,” he smiles.

    An Arctic Odyssey

In an era dominated by city marathons and the pursuit of speed, the Polar Circle Marathon offers something genuinely special. Set against the raw, untouched landscape of Greenland, this race allows runners to experience the balance of nature’s magnificence and its fragility.

Scheduled for October 25 and 26, the marathon will showcase the grueling yet rewarding journey where participants can opt for one of the races or take on the ultimate test—the Polar Bear Challenge, which combines both events. Felix has committed to this challenge, knowing each stride will remind him of nature’s awe-inspiring power and vulnerability.

His participation signifies not just a race—it’s a lifelong adventure, a journey through one of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth.
