Correction: An earlier report suggested that Gideon Lyberth resigned from the municipal board—this is not accurate. He has opted to pursue a career as a freelancer.
In a recent Facebook post, Gideon Lyberth announced, “After much deliberation, I have chosen to become a non-executive member of the municipal council and have entered into a cooperation agreement with the opposition.”
Lyberth’s decision to step back from his roles within the council stems from a growing concern regarding the municipal government’s focus. He expressed disappointment over the council’s plans, which prioritize the development of Sisimiut, the municipality’s largest city. “The majority coalition of Siumut and IA has significantly deviated from my personal and political values by directing their efforts primarily towards Sisimiut’s progress,” he stated.
For Lyberth, equitable development across all regions—both cities and settlements—is non-negotiable. He firmly believes that achieving this balance is only possible through collaboration with opposition members.
Aspirations for Kangerlussuaq
In his post, Lyberth highlighted the local government’s ambitious vision for the Kangerlussuaq area—plans in which the municipality has not yet engaged. In response, a new committee focused on business and raw materials has been established to help stimulate economic development within Qeqqata Kommunia.
As he steps away from Siumut, Lyberth confirmed that he will continue his journey as a freelancer. However, he did not indicate whether he intends to align himself with another political party.
KNR has reached out to both Gideon Lyberth and Mayor Malik Berthelsen for comments on this developing story.
