Early retirement pensioners demonstrate against poor conditions

The demonstration begins in Nuuk on Monday at 1 p.m.

Today, Monday at 1 p.m., a group of the country’s early retirement pensioners will take to the streets and demonstrate.

The demonstration starts at the community center in Nuuk and continues in a procession to Inatsisartut.

Behind the initiative is Jensine Lerch, who herself is an early retiree.

– The monthly benefits of early retirement pensioners are too low. We are not treated properly. It is expensive to live in Greenland, and everything is getting more and more expensive, including rent, electricity, food and other necessities, while our benefits are not adjusted to the rising prices, says Jensine Lerch and adds:

– Parents can’t even afford to buy clothes for their children.

But now the limit has been reached, says Jensine Lerch, who is demanding better treatment for early retirees.

According to Statistics Greenland, in December 2024 there were a total of 2,511 early retirement pensioners in Greenland.

The amount of disability pension a person is entitled to is assessed individually based on their working ability.

According to Sullissivik.gl, the highest disability pension is 135,642 kroner annually – that is, just over 11,300 kroner per month. The lowest set rate is 67,821 kroner annually. That is just over 5,650 kroner per month.

Over 50 people have reported that they are participating in the demonstration, and Jensine Lerch hopes that even more will join.
