On February 25, the Greenland Committee of the Danish Parliament will host a crucial hearing focused on the rights and experiences of Greenlanders, marking a significant step in the Danish government’s ongoing action plan against racism.
This hearing aims to spotlight the unique challenges faced by Greenlanders, especially those living in Denmark, and to explore potential solutions. Among the speakers is Julie Rademacher, a spokesperson for Uagut, who will discuss the specific needs and difficulties encountered by Greenlanders in Denmark. Additionally, Sara Olsvig, the head of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, will address Inuit rights and the pressing issues faced in the Arctic region.
Danish Minister of Social Affairs Sophie Hæstorp Andersen will also present her perspective on the challenges that arise in this context, contributing to a broader understanding of the situation.
### Reflecting on Our Shared History
Last January, the Danish government unveiled a comprehensive plan featuring 12 initiatives designed to combat racism directed at Greenlanders. “It is a serious issue,” remarked Danish Immigration and Integration Minister Kaare Dybvad (S) shortly after the plan’s announcement. He emphasized the importance of reflecting on Denmark’s historical relationship with Greenland and urged his fellow Danes to reconsider the prevailing stereotypes surrounding Greenlanders.
#### Action Plan Against Discrimination
The government has allocated a budget of DKK 35 million between 2025 and 2028 to combat discrimination and racism affecting Greenlanders. This funding will be distributed as follows: DKK 10 million in 2025, followed by DKK 5 million each year from 2026 to 2028. Furthermore, some of these initiatives are already supported by allocations in the Finance Act for 2024.
This action plan is the result of years of advocacy from various organizations highlighting the discrimination faced by Greenlanders.
The upcoming hearing at the Folketinget on February 25 is open for registration, and it promises to be an important platform for addressing these vital issues.
