Football: Concacaf rejects Greenland’s application for membership
The North American and Caribbean Association Football Confederation (Concacaf) has unanimously rejected Greenlandic membership.
The rush of anticipation upon submitting an application for membership of an international football federation has now turned into enormous disappointment in the Greenland Football Association KAK.
The North American and Caribbean Association Football Confederation (Concacaf) has unanimously decided to reject Greenland’s application for membership at its extraordinary congress. KAK writes in a press release.
KAK submitted its official application for membership in Concacaf in January. Concacaf acknowledged receipt of the application by calling KAK to a meeting, but at the same time writing that the call to the meeting should not be understood as approval of the application.
New rejection
And now the decision has been made and it certainly does not sit well with KAK.
– We will spend the next 24 hours evaluating our situation and discussing internally how we will respond to the decision, writes KAK chairman Kenneth Kleist in a press release.
– But for now we want to state that this is not a victory for football democracy, it does not make football accessible to everyone globally, and it shows that smaller nations face extremely large challenges in getting permission to play under their own flag, says Kenneth Kleist.
The desire for membership in the international football federation has long been on the agenda of the Greenland Football Association.
Membership in the European association UEFA has been investigated in collaboration with the Danish Football Association DBU. However, UEFA has rejected it on the grounds that Greenland is not an independent member of the UN as an independent nation.
KNR has requested further comment from KAK chairman Kenneth Kleist, but he will first discuss the situation with his supporters before commenting further.
