Morten Rutkjær Leads Greenland’s National Soccer Team in Austria
Morten Rutkjær, the national coach for Greenland’s men’s soccer team, is currently leading his squad in Austria. They are competing in the Amateur National Teams Nations Cup 2025, a pivotal tournament designed to enhance the team’s experience and cohesion on the international stage.
This gathering presents an excellent opportunity for Greenland to meet various nations and engage in critical matches—games that are essential for the team’s development and for elevating their status as a national squad.
“We are in the process of building a robust team that not only trains together but also faces strong opponents,” Rutkjær remarked during a training camp in Austria. “After being denied entry into Concacaf, we could have chosen to retreat, but instead, we’re determined to demonstrate that Greenlandic football is vibrant and that we are relentlessly working toward being part of the global football community.”
Over the coming week, the team is set to face formidable rivals Austria and Slovenia, with both matches scheduled to take place in Vienna.
“The players are showing great readiness and fitness,” said assistant coach Nukannguaq Zeeb. “Their hard work throughout the summer has paid off, making them sharp for these upcoming challenges.”
The coaching staff is visibly proud of the players’ dedication and progress. “I am genuinely proud that our national team is participating in this prestigious three-nation tournament,” Rutkjær added. “It provides us with an invaluable platform to showcase our commitment to the sport.”
As Greenland competes in Austria, they move closer to their goal of gaining recognition on the international football stage. However, not all has gone according to plan; on Monday, they faced a significant challenge, suffering a 5-1 defeat against Austria.
Despite this setback, the ambition remains strong, and the journey continues for Greenland’s national soccer team.
