Greenlandic law students can dream of the entire realm

A legal education from Ilisimatusarfik now provides access to top legal positions – both in Greenland and in Denmark.

The Ministry of Justice in Denmark has today decided that lawyers educated in Greenland can be equated with lawyers from Denmark and the Faroe Islands.

This gives Greenlandic lawyers access to apply for positions as judges, lawyers and prosecutors throughout the Commonwealth, writes Ilisimatusarfik in a press release.

Inequality in the system is corrected

Until now, Greenlandic lawyers with a master’s degree have not been able to hold top legal positions unless they have studied in Denmark.

– This is a milestone for the law education at Ilisimatusarfik – and an important step towards equal opportunities throughout the Kingdom, says Anette Storgaard, head of department for the law education at Ilisimatusarfik.

The decision comes from the Ministry of Justice in Denmark, which, after several years of work and dialogue with Ilisimatusarfik, now states that the education in Nuuk meets the same standards as the legal education in Denmark and the Faroe Islands.
