Qeqqata Kommunia’s Board Takes Aim at Unexcused Absences
In a significant shift towards accountability, the municipal board of Qeqqata Kommunia has approved a proposal by Rachel Ingemann (D) to impose financial repercussions on its members for unexcused absences from meetings.
Ingemann, a dedicated member of the municipal board, articulated her belief that it should no longer be acceptable for politicians to skip meetings without facing consequences. She stated, “It is too easy to resign oneself to absence with full remuneration,” emphasizing that timely cancellations would still be recognized as valid.
This move comes on the heels of similar actions taken by Nuuk, the capital municipality, which has set a precedent for tying attendance to pay. According to the municipality’s administration, there have been ten instances of absence without cancellation in 2025 alone, amidst a total of 25 committee meetings held throughout the year.
In light of these findings, the administration advocates that implementing salary deductions would foster a sense of responsibility among board members. Such measures aim to discourage needless absences and cultivate a deeper respect for the time of colleagues.
In a session on November 27, the municipal board unanimously agreed to adopt a salary deduction structure akin to that of Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, where unexcused absences will incur a penalty of DKK 569.70. This decision signals a new era of accountability in municipal governance, ensuring that every member values their commitment to public service.
