The round-trip flight ticket to Nuuk for 1000 kroner, intended for Greenlandic students in Denmark, has now come into effect.

Students in Denmark can now hop on a plane to Nuuk on a round-trip ticket for 1000 kroner.

The scheme is part of the Danish Finance Act for 2025, which was passed in November last year. 6 million kroner was allocated to increase students’ ties to Greenland.

But it is only Tuesday that the offer has now come into effect.

For IA’s parliamentary politician, Aaja Chemnitz, who has had the 1000 kroner ticket as a flagship issue, it is important to increase students’ attachment to their home country.

    – We know that only 56 percent move home after they have completed their education in Denmark. So we really want there to be a stronger connection between our Greenlandic students in Denmark, she told KNR back in November.

Benefit Greenland in the long term

Students can apply for the 1000 kroner ticket through the Greenlandic House in Copenhagen. It is an offer that can be used in addition to the annual free travel for Greenlandic students.

The 1000-kroner ticket is for Nuuk as the destination. If you are travelling elsewhere domestically, you will have to pay for it yourself.

Although the Greenlandic students’ organization in Denmark, Avalak, is happy with the new offer, the organization has previously criticized that the cheap airfare does not apply to the entire country.

    – We also believe that it will increase the students’ attachment to our country during and after their education. We believe that it will reduce loneliness and increase well-being during their education. We think that this will benefit Greenland as a whole in the long term, said Avalak chairwoman Najana Kristensen back in December.

    She continued:

    – But it is Avalak’s wish that all Greenlandic students can get an offer for cheap plane tickets on equal terms.

A click on Air Greenland’s website shows that a round-trip flight ticket from Denmark to Nuuk now costs between 6,000 and 7,000 kroner.
