Ittoqqortoormiit and Tasiilaq should have airports

The construction program, which is expected to be ready by the end of 2025, will form the basis for a political decision on whether the further process of the projects for the construction of regional airports in Ittoqqortoormiit and Tasiilaq should be continued.

For a number of years, studies have been conducted into the possibilities of establishing an airport in Tasiilaq and at lttoqqortoormiit. Now suitable locations have been found, and it is up to the new Inatsisartut, which is behind the coalition agreement, whether the project should be continued.

Included in the coalition agreement

The coalition agreement between Demokraatit, Inuit Ataqatigiit, Siumut and Atassut states that they will ensure smooth and affordable passenger transport in Greenland, and that efficient airports and runways are necessary to reduce transport times and costs, which according to Naalakkersuisut is essential to attract more tourists and improve general transport options for citizens. The coalition believes that a comprehensive national plan for ports and airports must be prepared and implemented, which will ensure that the entire country can benefit from the major investments that have already been made in connection with the construction of the airports in Nuuk, Ilulissat and Qaqortoq. In this context, Naalakkersuisut will therefore ensure that work on building airports in Tasiilaq and Ittoqqortoormiit is initiated during this election period.

Construction program under preparation

Feasibility studies have already been made for the establishment of airports in Tasiilaq and at lttoqqortoormiit, where suitable locations have been found. The Finance and Tax Committee in Inatsisartut has subsequently decided that a construction program and an updated C-estimate must be prepared, which is a form of offer where the price is a non-binding estimate based on an assessment of the scope and costs of a project, as well as general prices for materials for the two projects. According to Aqqaluaq B. Egede, the construction program, which will form the basis for a political decision on the further process with the projects, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Gert Mikaelsen also wants to know what measures the Greenland Government will take in relation to traffic challenges in East Greenland. Aqqaluaq B. Egede states that he is in the process of holding meetings with the various operators in order to find joint solutions.

– It is very important to me that the operators have fewer cancellations due to technical issues, as this will provide better regularity and better service for travelers, says Naalakkersuisoq for Infrastructure.

 Happy with the announcement

Gert Mikaelsen says that the time has come to build airports in the two cities in East Greenland.

– Unfortunately, we must note that the airport in Kulusuk has a very limited beneficial effect on passenger traffic in East Greenland, and I am therefore pleased that the new Greenlandic government will actually implement the plans during this election period.

– It is not only passenger transport that has been badly hit, but freight transport and food supply have been under criticism for many years, which is why I believe that airports should be established in Ittoqqortoormiit and Tasiilaq in the coming years, he says.

The Greenlandic Government has initiated the largest development plan to date for the fishing industry in Tasiilaq and the surrounding area, and Gert Mikaelsen believes that a new airport in Tasiilaq will pave the way for export opportunities for fresh fish to other countries.
