Historic Qualification for Junior WC: Marika Magnussen and Sasja Joelsen Hendriksen Shine
In an inspiring achievement for cross-country skiing, Marika Magnussen and Sasja Joelsen Hendriksen have qualified for the 2026 Junior World Championships in Lillehammer. This momentous event marks a significant return for Greenland to the prestigious competition, with no representation since 2013.
Currently residing in Meråker, Norway, both athletes are immersing themselves in one of Norway’s premier cross-country skiing hubs. Here, they balance their academic pursuits with a serious commitment to skiing, thriving in an environment that fosters teamwork and mutual support—key elements that have propelled their success.
Remarkably, Marika and Sasja secured their qualification after just their first race of the season at the Gålå Norges Cup. Their performances were nothing short of impressive; both qualified far surpassing the required standard. Marika finished just 9.9 percent behind the winner, while Sasja trailed by 15.9 percent—extraordinary results that highlight their dedication and talent in the competitive realm of junior cross-country skiing.
Marie Fleischer, Chair of the Union of Athletes (UA), expressed immense pride in the duo’s achievements. “We are incredibly proud of Marika and Sasja for their outstanding efforts,” she said. “Their success illustrates the impact of dedicated training and a strong club environment. We hope that in January, during the final selection races, we might see one or two more young athletes qualify.”
National coach Martin Møller echoed Fleischer’s sentiments, emphasizing the hard work exhibited by the two skiers. “This is a significant milestone for Greenlandic cross-country skiing,” he stated. “Marika and Sasja have shown remarkable commitment and consistency, whether in Denmark or after their move to Meråker. I’m immensely proud of them, and we are optimistic about bringing in one or two additional runners when the final qualification rounds take place in January.”
As Marika and Sasja embark on this exciting chapter, their qualification not only represents a personal triumph but also stands as a beacon of hope for the entire cross-country skiing community in Greenland.
