The country’s largest contractor is reaching new heights and had a turnover of almost 600 million kroner in 2024. KJ Greenland has also had a large investment program and paid a good amount of tax for the company’s employees.

Greenland’s largest contractor, KJ Greenland A/S, headquartered in Ilulissat, maintains sky-high turnover.

While revenue landed at 593 million kroner, the company made a profit before tax of 21.7 million kroner.

In 2023, the construction company had a turnover of 450 million kroner and a profit before tax of 6.2 million kroner. So 2024 has been characterized by solid growth in turnover and a nice increase in profit.

    – After three years where our earnings were not satisfactory, we are satisfied with the earnings in 2024.

This is stated by CEO Karl Jensen and CFO Palle Bendtsen in a joint comment on the latest financial results.

    Expecting continued growth

Karl Jensen and Palle Bendtsen are two of the five owners of KJ Greenland, which last year had construction projects from the settlement of Kullorsuaq to the town of Qaqortoq. As the crow flies, it is 1,600 km from the settlement in North Greenland to the town in South Greenland.

KJ Greenland’s largest “overall” project was the construction of a terminal and service building for Greenland Airports and the construction of a hangar for Air Greenland. The Ilulissat buildings will be handed over to the clients in the autumn.

The construction company expects continued growth this year. KJ Greenland has a reasonable order backlog, which at the beginning of 2025 was just under 600 million kroner.

This year, the company expects revenue of around 600-650 million kroner and a pre-tax profit of 25-30 million. The airport construction projects in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq and the renovation of a port in Maniitsoq continue to take up the most space.

It is with some pride that KJ Greenland’s management believes that the company’s employees paid DKK 57.9 million in A-taxes in 2024, compared to DKK 55.2 million in 2023.

    – We are fully committed to and solve diverse tasks in the local communities of which we are a part, and our employees therefore pay taxes in the local communities of which we are a part, says the CFO.

KJ Greenland’s normal business area is North Greenland, i.e. the Municipality of Qeqertalik and Avannaata Municipality. In 2023, KJ Greenland entered into a contract with Greenland Airports for a turnkey contract for the construction of the airport buildings at the new regional airport in Qaqortoq. The buildings will be handed over to Greenland Airports this year.

Strive hard to recruit local employees

KJ Greenland’s financial statements for 2024 are not only impressive in terms of revenue.

    – We are working hard to recruit as many local employees as possible and are spending a lot of money on training apprentices, says Palle Bendtsen.

KJ Greenland currently has 15-20 apprentices undergoing training in various trades. The company also has an apprenticeship program with stays at schools and team building, etc. for the apprentices.

In 2024, the company has completed four internships for designers and engineers, and KJ Greenland expects that level to be maintained.

The majority of the students attend school in Sisimiut. Currently, only construction mechanics are attending school in Denmark.

    – We are probably one of the companies in the construction industry that has the most apprentices. It is not a lucrative business for us, but we never compromise on that because we feel a responsibility towards Greenlandic society, says CEO Karl Jensen.

KJ Greenland is probably the only company in the construction industry that sends supervisors to the apprentices for part of the time they are at school.

    – It can be hard for apprentices to be at school far from home. With a supervisor, they have someone to talk to, says CFO Palle Bendtsen.

    Investeringer

In the past two financial years, the construction company has invested almost 69 million kroner to ensure that KJ Greenland can solve both current and future tasks.

    – When people read that we have had a profit of up to 30 million kroner in the last two financial years, they might think we are rolling in money. But we have used all the money and more to invest in the future. So we have to hope that society will come up with some tasks for us, says Palle Bendtsen.

The company has invested in everything from a camp for the airport project in Qaqortoq to a ship to transport materials and personnel, plus machinery and other equipment for task completion.
