Maria Grødem will compete at the World Cup
Functional fitness, which is an offshoot of CrossFit, has Greenlandic participation among the best in an age group.
Maria Grødem has become Danish champion in functional fitness, during the Danish Championship week in Aalborg, which ended on Sunday.
Maria Grødem, participated in the age group 45-49 years old and won gold
– Becoming Danish champion means that I will be invited to the World Championships in Functional Fitness in Brisbane, Australia, and it will take place around November 20th, says Maria Grødem.
She also attended the European Championships two weeks ago in the Netherlands, where she came second in her age group.
Functional fitness is an offshoot of the strength training sport CrossFit. Functional fitness also includes flexibility exercises that are not included in CrossFit. Functional fitness is now also included in the Olympic program.
High level
Maria Grødem is cautious about expectations for the World Cup, even though she came second at the European Championships.
– The level is very high, and I think it is higher than last year, says Maria Grødem about the level at the World Championships in November.
– I have now participated in many competitions in functional fitness, but also in crossfit. And now you are starting to see people who normally participate in crossfit competitions moving over to functional fitness. So I can see that there will be very tough competition, says Maria Grødem.
Dream versus reality
There are still five months until the World Cup in Australia, but the focus area for training has already been set.
– It’s actually an advantage for me right now, because I’m not as strong as I usually am, and it takes a long time to build strength. So the five months will be spent getting stronger and building strength and of course having better fitness, says Maria Grødem.
Dreams and reality don’t always meet. Given the strong field at the World Championships, reality may be different from dreams. And the uncertainty about expectations is also due to the fact that the list of participants is not yet complete.
– My dream goal would probably be the top three, but I think it’s more realistic to be in the top ten, concludes Maria Grødem.
