Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s Prime Minister, has expressed skepticism about the likelihood of the United States resorting to military force to seize Greenland. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, coinciding with the New Year celebrations, she shared her insights with reporters from Reuters.

Meloni cautioned that any American aggression towards Greenland could have profound implications for NATO, the transatlantic defense alliance. Yet, she also emphasized the importance of maintaining a “serious and significant” NATO presence in the Arctic, including Greenland.

Her remarks came in the wake of a statement made by several heads of state, including Meloni herself, on Tuesday. They collectively asserted that only Denmark and Greenland hold the authority to decide the territory’s future. This declaration followed remarks from former President Donald Trump, who reiterated that Greenland is vital for U.S. national security, even leaving the door open to the possibility of military action to assert control over the territory.

As geopolitical tensions continue to rise, the balance of power in the Arctic remains a topic of serious global concern.
