Naalakkersuisoq for Culture, Nivi Olsen (D), presented this year’s Culture Prize and Encouragement Prize on Saturday.

Musician and actor Miké Thomsen received this year’s Culture Award from the Greenlandic Government on Saturday – on the country’s national day. At the same time, visual artist Malu Lange received this year’s Encouragement Award. The Greenlandic Government writes in a press release.

The awards were presented by the Minister of Culture of Greenland, Nivi Olsen (D), in Katuaq in Nuuk. And in addition to a financial reward, the two award winners also received kind words.

    Culture Award and Encouragement Award

The Greenlandic Cultural Prize was established by the Government of Greenland in 1982. The prize is awarded together with 50,000 kroons to one or more persons or organisations who have made an extraordinary contribution to cultural life. The prize is awarded every year on National Day, 21 June. The Government of Greenland’s encouragement prize of 10,000 kroons was established in 2016. It is awarded to a young talent in connection with the Cultural Prize.

Nivi Olsen describes Miké Thomsen, among other things, as a “remarkable cultural personality with a philosophical approach to life”.

    – He is one of the few multi-artists we have in Greenland who has made a mark in both music and theater. It takes something special to be on stage, the freedom to create, to challenge, to be. And it is precisely this freedom that the award winner has made her artistic compass, she says.

Malu Lange receives the encouragement award for her “realistic art”, which requires patience, technical skill and deep understanding. This is stated by Nivi Olsen in the press release.

    – Through your works, you invite us to see the world as you see it: honestly, sensitively and with a special clarity. It is a gift, and that is precisely why you deserve this encouragement prize.
