The Government of Greenland states in a press release that the company’s EIA and SIA reports have been approved. The reports describe the expected environmental and social impacts of implementing the mining project.
The project aims to extract anorthosites northeast of Qeqertarsuatsiaat.
Important milestone
Naalakkersuisoq for Raw Materials, Naaja H. Nathanielsen (IA) states that the approval is an important milestone in the process:
Anorthosite project at Qeqertarsuatsiaat has been granted a mining license
– Together with the EIA report, the SIA report forms the framework for the upcoming mining and decommissioning plans, which bring the project even closer to mining operations.
She further says that the SIA report should form the framework for the so-called “IBA”, which is an agreement between the company, the municipality and Naalakkersuisut.
– In it, we will specify initiatives between the company and the local area. I look forward to continuing a constructive dialogue with the company in close partnership with Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, says Naaja H. Nathanielsen.
Mining activities must start by the end of 2028 at the latest
Naalakkersuisoq’s Minister for the Environment, Bentiaraq Ottosen, states that protecting nature is important for Naalakkersuisut in the development of new mineral projects:
– We can’t just think about today – we also have a responsibility for the generations that come after us, he says, emphasizing that the project also has the potential to create new jobs and strengthen employment locally.
Naalakkersusiut states that Greenland Anorthosite Mining now has until December 31, 2026 to submit a mining and closure plan.
Mining activities must commence no later than December 31, 2028 unless otherwise approved.
