Strengthened Ties in North Atlantic Handball: A New Chapter for Greenland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands

In a significant development for handball in the North Atlantic region, the handball associations of Greenland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands have formalized a commitment to collaboration. The Greenland Handball Association (TAAK), the Icelandic Handball Association (HSÍ), and the Faroese Handball Association (HSF) signed a joint declaration of intent, aiming to elevate the sport across their nations.

This milestone was announced via a press release from TAAK, highlighting a shared goal among the three federations: each will continue to represent their respective countries with pride during World Cup and qualification events.

The agreement was inked on October 15, during halftime of the European Championship qualifying match between the Icelandic and Faroese women’s national teams in Reykjavik. The event was broadcasted, attracting notable attendees, including Greenlandic members of the Naalakkersuisut, Nivi Olsen (D) and Vivian Motzfeldt (S).

As part of this new partnership, Greenland’s women’s A national team is set to engage in a series of matches against Iceland’s U20 squad, fostering competitive growth.

The cooperation promises to facilitate joint training camps, exchanges of coaches and referees, and enhanced talent development opportunities, all while promoting participation in international tournaments.

This initial two-year agreement includes provisions for potential extension, and the next step entails forming a working group tasked with establishing a sustainable and effective organizational and financial framework for this exciting collaboration.
