A New Chapter for the Icelandic Meteorological Office’s Website

    3.2.2025

Today marks a significant milestone for the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) with the launch of the first phase of its redesigned website. This initiative represents the beginning of an ambitious project that aims to overhaul not only the online platform but also its underlying technical framework.

Visitors can now explore the revamped weather forecast site at gottvedur.is/en. While the site remains under development, the finalized version will eventually find a home at vedur.is. This initial rollout emphasizes the most sought-after information: localized weather forecasts. Users can enjoy a more user-friendly interface for checking forecasts, with many additional locations to be incorporated over time.

Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, Minister of the Environment, Energy, and Climate, unveiled the new site today, alongside Hildigunnur HH Thorsteinsson, Director of the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

“It is a great pleasure for me to inaugurate the new website of the Icelandic Meteorological Office. This first step towards an improved platform is a significant advancement in access to critical weather data and information on natural forces,” said Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson. “I believe this site will be invaluable in people’s daily lives, serving as a reliable tool for gathering and sharing meteorological insights. It feels particularly appropriate to launch it on a day filled with typical Icelandic winter weather.”

“The existing website has served us well for nearly two decades, making today a momentous occasion,” added Hildigunnur HH Thorsteinsson. “Its long-standing stability is a testament to its initial quality, yet over time we have accumulated significant technical debt within both the site and its IT infrastructure. What we see today is merely the beginning of a comprehensive digital transformation. One of the most noticeable enhancements users will appreciate is the new site’s improved mobile compatibility,” she concluded.
