Jesper Labansen, a dedicated advocate for the “Sukuutserta – Let’s Skate” initiative, orchestrated a vibrant skating disco this past weekend in Nuuk, much to the delight of families and friends who joined in on the fun.
In the weeks leading up to the event, a team of enthusiastic volunteers worked tirelessly, clearing away snow and ensuring that the ice was in top condition for an evening filled with wintery revelry.
“We’ve put in countless hours repairing the rink, which suffered due to insufficient snow removal during a recent weather shift,” Labansen noted in an interview with Sermitsiaq. “But seeing the smiles on the faces of both children and adults makes it all worthwhile.”
As dusk settled, the scene was electrified with pulsating music and vivid disco lights. A local DJ kept busy, fulfilling song requests primarily from the younger crowd, who exuberantly danced on the ice. Many attendees seized the opportunity to borrow skates from the project’s collection, while others brought their own—made even better with on-the-spot sharpening services provided by the local committee.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, students from Atuarfik Hans Lynge hosted a stall selling hot cocoa and cakes, with proceeds going towards their upcoming study trip.
Reflecting on the successful evening, Labansen expressed hope for continued community support: “We’re eager to keep the rink maintained and are looking forward to hosting more skating discos this winter.” With the enthusiasm evident in the air, it’s clear that the spirit of winter skating is alive and well in Nuuk.
