According to a press release from Chrisma, the acquisition marks the start of a new and impactful northern Norwegian shipping company headquartered in Tromsø.
It happens with the brothers Haakon Kjile Pettersen and Karl Olav Kjile Pettersen as the main owners and in the management.
Chrisma writes in the press release.
Polar Seafood Norway, which is a subsidiary of the Danish Polar Seafood Denmark, continues its part-ownership and contributes as a solid partner, according to the announcement.
– Together with Chrisma, they will contribute both experience and stability, and not least market access, writes Chrisma.
Polar Seafood Denmark, headquartered in Vodskov near Aalborg, of which Polar Seafood Greenland owns half, has the same ownership stake in the three Norwegian snow crab shipping companies as before, namely 40 percent.
Polar director: – Solid event
– We are joining the new shipping company together with Chrisma to enter into a more solid arrangement, says Henrik Leth, CEO of Polar Seafood Denmark, to Sermitsiaq.
He believes that the hitherto loss-making snow crab fishery, not least with Chrisma as a partner, can develop into a lucrative one.
The three shipping companies have the vessels «Arctic Pioner», «Kvitungen» and «Polar Pioneer», which this year in the first licensing round, according to the Norwegian fishing media, Fiskeribladet, have fished a total of 1,690 tons of snow crab.
Chrisma has the boat «Tromsbas», which has landed 700 tons of snow crab. Trombas is one of the largest players in the snow crab fishery.
As Sermitsiaq wrote in November last year, Polar Seafood Denmark has suffered a total loss of 200 million kroner since the group entered the snow crab fishery in the Barents Sea a few years ago.
– This is the biggest loss we have ever had on an investment, CEO Henrik Leth acknowledged at the time.
Has written off 200 million kroner
Greenlandic Polar Seafood Greenland and Icelandic Brim each own 50 percent of Polar Seafood Denmark.
Half of the loss of 200 million kroner has been taken by Polar Seafood Greenland, which is owned by Miki Brøns, Bent Salling and Laila Salling.
Polar Seafood Denmark lent the money to Polar Pioneer, Arctic Pioner and Kvitungen to finance operations and investments in the vessels.
Pioneer
The shipping companies, of which Polar Seafood Denmark has owned 40 percent, have so far generated significant losses. Polar Seafood Denmark has written off the 200 million kroner in the group’s accounts for 2024 and previous years on the snow crab business.
The Pettersen and Kraknes families are pioneers in the Norwegian snow crab fishery, and over the past half-dozen years they have been among the largest players in the fishery.
