As Qaqortoq Airport Takes Flight, New Rescue Vehicles Join the Lineup
Qaqortoq Airport has enhanced its safety measures with the addition of two Buffalo crash tenders—specially designed vehicles meant for use during flight emergencies and other critical situations. Built on a Scania P460 chassis, these Rosenbauer Buffalo 6×6 vehicles are equipped for rapid response on the runways and adaptable for use in off-airport incidents as well.
“These tenders are engineered for swift deployment during a crisis, whether on the runway or in surrounding areas,” explains Stine Buur Hvistendahl, Brand Manager at Greenland Airports.
Robust Performance: 4,800 Liters of Water Per Minute
These crash tenders form the backbone of the airport’s emergency readiness, standing by for aircraft accidents, fire outbreaks, or other urgent situations within the airport’s perimeter.
With their high-capacity water cannons, these rugged vehicles can deliver massive volumes of water or foam during an aircraft fire in remarkably quick succession. Notably, one tender is outfitted with a FLIR infrared camera, allowing for enhanced visibility of heat sources through smoke or darkness—a vital advantage during emergencies.
Snow Control: Throwing Snow Up to 40 Meters
The snow thrower at Qaqortoq Airport is a state-of-the-art machine designed to tackle winter’s challenges by efficiently clearing runways, taxiways, and other crucial areas. Its features ensure that air traffic remains safe and uninterrupted during the snowy months.
This specialized equipment employs a two-stage snow thrower system. A rotating drum loosens the snow, and then a powerful fan propels it away through an adjustable spout, ensuring that the runway remains cleared and operational.
