Greenland Police Release 2025 Crime Statistics

The Greenland Police have released their statistics for reported complaints in 2025, offering a nuanced look at crime trends across various categories.

A total of 4,084 offenses have been logged under the Criminal Code, reflecting an increase of 203 reports from the year prior. However, when we consider the average reports from 2021 to 2024, this year falls 313 cases below that benchmark.

What stands out most in this report are the figures related to sexual crimes. With 445 reports registered, this marks the lowest tally since 2018.

A Closer Look at Sexual Crimes

Notably, there has been a significant reduction in reports of sexual abuse involving children under the age of 15. In 2023 and 2024, there were 249 and 193 reports, respectively, whereas 2025 experienced a marked decline to just 129 cases.

Police Director Bjørn Tegner Bay emphasized this point in the report’s foreword: “While the decrease may appear positive on the surface, the total number of reviews remains alarmingly high. This highlights the urgent need for society to consistently focus on combating child abuse.”

    Trends in Juvenile Delinquency

In stark contrast, reports of juvenile offenses have surged. With 447 cases recorded last year, this figure exceeds the 2021-2024 average by nearly 25 percent. The last time youth crime reached such heights was in 2016.

Among those aged 15 to 17, a range of offenses are noted, including criminal enrichment, violent crimes, and utility theft, alongside incidents of vandalism. Interestingly, reports of crimes targeting children have generally declined, even as violent offenses amongst juveniles have risen by approximately 26 percent compared to the previous year.

The Landscape of Violence and Homicide

The number of violent incidents has increased to 1,155 reports in 2025, a rise of 204 from the previous year. Nonetheless, this figure aligns closely with the four-year average of 1,152.

In addition to general violence, the police have reported on homicide and suicide figures. While the overall numbers of attempted murders and homicides remain stable, there was a dramatic spike in attempted murders in 2023, which saw a 71 percent increase. Last year recorded 21 attempted murders, while the number of homicides stood at six.

Suicide rates have not gone unnoticed either, with an average of 41.5 suicides documented from 2021 to 2024. In 2025, that figure rose to 50.

The police’s annual statistics do not delve deeper into age, geography, or other specifics regarding murders and suicides.

    A Decline in Drug-Related Cases

On a more positive note, drug offenses have declined, with 380 cases reported last year—138 fewer than the average for the previous four years. This marks the second consecutive year of decreasing drug-related cases.

Additionally, law enforcement has seized over ten million kroner in cash, particularly in Nuuk, although the origins of this significant sum remain unclear. Notably, a man was apprehended at the airport in late May, facing charges related to money laundering.

The data offer a complex picture of crime in Greenland, underscoring both progress and ongoing challenges that demand our attention.
