Support for Young Adults in Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq: A Pathway to Independence

Over the past year, Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has stepped up its efforts to assist 39 young individuals navigating the often tumultuous transition to adulthood. For many, this journey is fraught with uncertainty, shaped by experiences of social deprivation or time spent in care away from their families.

In a recent press release, the municipality emphasized the importance of providing these young people the opportunity to embrace their youth a bit longer, despite their legal status as adults. Many have not yet mastered the skills essential for independent living, such as budgeting and managing daily responsibilities.

“One of our roles is to support these young people on their journey, meeting them where they are and respecting their life experiences,” remarked a member of the aftercare team.

    Security Breeds Confidence

Among the 39 young people who have benefited from this initiative, 14 have successfully completed aftercare programs. Several are now gainfully employed, furthering their education, or even living independently.

However, the aftercare initiative extends beyond mere practical assistance. It fosters a sense of security and nurtures meaningful relationships, both crucial for empowering these young adults to embrace independence and build self-esteem. The professionals involved have witnessed firsthand the resurgence of hope and responsibility in these young people as they navigate the challenges of growing up.

“When a young person tells us our support has inspired them to pursue an education and believe in themselves, it reaffirms the impact of our efforts,” shared Maliina Junge Jørgensen, head of the department.

One participant nearing the completion of his course expressed how the extra support has equipped him with vital tools for greater independence, providing a reliable adult figure for guidance.

“I’ve gained many skills to tackle the challenges that come with growing up, learned to think more healthily, engaged in constructive conversations, and gathered insights that will serve me well in the future,” he said.

    A Commitment to Improvement

Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq is dedicated to continuously enhancing the quality and effectiveness of its aftercare programs. The goal is to ensure that young individuals in vulnerable situations receive the comprehensive support they need on their journey toward independence.

“We must acknowledge the significant work our professionals do day in and day out. Without their dedication, these young people would lack the stability that makes aftercare an essential investment for our society,” Jørgensen concluded.
