    – The inmates in the prison experience the visits from the Seamen’s Home as a kind of “vent” where they can release their frustrations. It is something that the inmates always look forward to, says the head of the prison in Nuuk.

The Seamen’s Home wins the PiSiu Award 2025 for their long-term voluntary efforts and commitment to socially disadvantaged people in Greenland.

PiSiu, the Greenlandic preventive council, writes this in a press release.

This is the third time that the PiSiu Prize has been awarded for an effort that has made a difference in the area of crime prevention. The prize comes with 20,000 kroner.

    – The Seamen’s Home wins the award this year because it has provided extraordinary volunteer work in Greenland for many years, including singing, playing, having one-on-one conversations about life with inmates in the institutions, building bridges to local associations including the chess club in Nuuk, offering breakfast and evening meals to the homeless, and not least providing a physical sanctuary where everyone is welcome, recognized and accepted. The Seamen’s Home offers a respite for those whose everyday life can be harsh, the press release states.

Peter Formsgaard, head of the Nuuk office, says:

    – The inmates in the institution experience the visits from the Seamen’s Home as a kind of “vent” where they can release their frustrations. It is therefore an important break from everyday life to receive a visit from the Seamen’s Home and something that the inmates always look forward to.

The award ceremony was held at the prison in Nuuk.
