Discover the Best Coffee Shops in and Around Reykjavík: A Caffeine Lover’s Guide

In a country that ranks third globally in coffee consumption per capita, it’s no wonder that our love for exceptional brews is woven into the very fabric of Icelandic culture. Here at Hidden Iceland, we’ve curated a list of our top coffee stops—both in Reykjavík and beyond—to share the rich tapestry of flavors we’ve encountered on our caffeine-fueled adventures.

As we embark on exploring some of Iceland’s breathtaking attractions within a day’s drive of Reykjavík—such as the enchanting Golden Circle, glacier hiking, and venturing deep into lava caves—we firmly believe that a fine coffee break is essential for fueling these unforgettable experiences.

Why Coffee is Essential in Our Tours

At Hidden Iceland, our tours embody a spirit of personalization and adventure. We take pride in treating our guests like family, ensuring we visit only the most remarkable spots while unearthing hidden gems along the way. Importantly, we embrace a leisurely pace, allowing for moments of reflection and relaxation amidst the day’s explorations. And let’s face it: nothing brightens the day quite like a well-timed caffeine fix. Our guides can certainly attest to this—they appreciate a good cup just as much as our travelers do!

    BEST COFFEE SHOPS IN REYKJAVÍK

One of the newer players in Reykjavík’s coffee scene is Hygge Coffee & Micro Bakery. With locations in both West Town and the city center, this cozy haven offers not just a delightful cup of joe, but also a tempting array of on-site baked pastries—vegan options included—as well as toasted sandwiches and hearty soups. On sunny days, their outdoor seating area shines, providing a perfect spot to savor your brew.

If you’re in search of pure flavor, Reykjavík Roasters stands as one of Iceland’s finest. Here, time stands still as the baristas skillfully measure each coffee grain and monitor the milk temperature to ensure your cup is nothing short of perfection. The staff are true professionals, exuding a passion for their craft that elevates each brew. The minimalist vibe, complemented by vintage tunes spun on a record player, creates a welcome respite for travelers after exploring landmarks like Hallgrímskirkja or shopping along Laugavegur.

Kaktus Espressobar, with locations on Vitastígur and inside the National Gallery of Iceland, radiates warmth and coziness. Here, passionate baristas serve premium coffee amidst a relaxed atmosphere, and the inviting outdoor seating is just perfect for enjoying simple yet delicious food alongside delightful pastries.

Plantan offers a choice between two distinct locations in Reykjavík, each catering to different tastes. The original Plantan Café, just a stone’s throw from downtown shopping, serves breakfast, sandwiches, and light lunches, while Plantan Bistró, located within the Nordic House, emphasizes sustainability in its offerings. Just a short walk from the city center, this bistro features a seasonal menu celebrating local ingredients paired with wonderful pastries and, of course, excellent coffee.

Then there’s Klambrar Bistro, situated within Kjarvalsstaðir Art Museum. With huge windows overlooking a serene park, this Norwegian-style café is a local favorite, serving Scandinavian-inspired dishes and delicious baked goods. After your meal, take a moment to explore the museum’s exhibits or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

For a taste of local flavor, venture to Kaffi Vest, an unassuming spot that attracts more locals than tourists. Far from the hustle and bustle, it’s perfectly positioned for a post-swim coffee after visiting the nearby Vesturbæjarlaug geothermal pool or while exploring the Grótta Lighthouse, an excellent Northern Lights viewing venue. Their menu features a tempting brunch and lunch lineup, and I can personally vouch for their Eggs Benedict and homemade carrot cake—paired with a perfectly crafted latte, of course.

BEST COFFEE SHOPS OUTSIDE OF REYKJAVÍK

At the south of Iceland, you’ll find a unique little café housed in a converted American school bus, once a glacier guiding vehicle. Called Skool Beans, this micro-roastery is the brainchild of owner Holly, who has transformed it into a cozy spot for freshly roasted coffee and inventive hot chocolate recipes. It’s a charming escape, especially when you can curl up by the fireplace with a good book—and share a moment with resident feline Jeffarious Edward the First, who’s likely to take an unbothered snooze nearby.

If you venture towards the Golden Circle, a stop at Friðheimar is a must. This café, with its lush tomato plants thriving in a geothermal greenhouse, serves a primarily tomato-based menu, including their unique tomato soup and delicious pizzas. For the adventurous, their tomato coffee offers a daring twist on the traditional brew. After your meal, take a stroll through the greenhouse or visit the nearby stables to meet friendly Icelandic horses.

Located in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Sjávarpakkhúsið champions local ingredients and sustainable practices. A perfect pit stop for travelers exploring this stunning region, the café’s cozy atmosphere invites lingering over coffee. The menu highlights locally sourced meals, making it a favorite among culinary enthusiasts and those seeking a taste of Iceland’s bounty.

In Akureyri, the northern capital, you’ll discover Kaffistofan, a specialty coffee shop committed to serving ethically sourced beans roasted in small batches. This newest addition to Akureyri’s vibrant food scene is where quality meets community, making it an ideal spot to kick back and enjoy a taste of the North.
