A Rare and Tragic Encounter: Drowned Reindeer Found Entangled

During a recent reindeer hunt in September, Lasse Trolle made a shocking discovery: two drowned reindeer, their antlers hopelessly intertwined in a lake. This rare occurrence may have unfolded as the animals struggled to free themselves from one another.

As Trolle recounted, the moment was both surreal and poignant. “While we navigated the lake, we spotted an antler protruding from the water,” he said. “Upon closer inspection, we realized it was entangled with another. Beneath the surface lay the partially decomposed bodies of two fully grown males.”

Trolle speculated that the incident likely occurred the previous autumn during the rutting season. “It’s likely they were battling for females,” he explained. “At some point, their antlers got locked together, and in their desperation to escape, they fell into the lake and drowned.” Although he had heard of such instances, this was the first time he had encountered anything like it firsthand.

    A Scientist’s Perspective

Katrine Raundrup, a researcher at Pinngortital Reef specializing in land mammals, emphasized just how rare such fatalities are. “In my experience, it’s incredibly uncommon for reindeer to die from entangled antlers,” she stated. “I’ve never come across this situation before. When males enter the estrous season, their competitive instincts can lead to remarkable—and sometimes tragic—behavior.”

Raundrup highlighted that excessive aggression during this time can result in fights that leave the males locked together, a perilous position that could ultimately lead to drowning or vulnerability to predators.

An earlier instance that echoes this tragedy occurred in 2010 when caretakers at Aalborg Zoo were forced to intervene. After two males had engaged in a furious battle, they became so enmeshed that zookeepers had to use a saw to separate them. Such entanglements often render the animals vulnerable to predators like bears and wolves, underscoring the fierce realities of the wild.

While such incidents may be rare, they serve as stark reminders of nature’s often brutal dynamics, revealing both the beauty and the brutality of life in the wild.
