A New Era of Female Runners Shines at Greenland’s Championships

In a stunning display of talent and determination, 16-year-old Nanna Møller left her mark on the recent championships in Nuuk, clinching victories in every race she participated in—though, unfortunately, she had to sit out the opening 10km due to illness.

This year’s competition showcased an impressive wave of young female talent. Alongside Møller, the 18-year-old Marika Magnussen and Sasja Joelsen Hendriksen, 19, emerged as powerful contenders, competing alongside the seasoned Ukaleq Slettemark, 24, an Olympic participant. Together, they elevated the level of competition, paving the way for a bright future in Greenlandic cross-country skiing.

A press release from the cross-country committee noted a clear trend: the young athletes, particularly among women, are establishing their presence at the forefront of the sport.

The men’s field, however, presented a different picture. Bent Salling proved his dominance by winning across all distances. Although he faced a spirited challenge in the sprint from Qunaaq Jensen, an impressive 18-year-old who demonstrated remarkable speed, Salling ultimately held his ground.

Hosted by the organizing club NUP, the championships were a resounding success. The event brought together participants of all ages, from budding young skiers to seasoned veterans, and included para-athletes, underscoring the depth and growth of cross-country skiing in Greenland.
