In 2024, the Government of Greenland approved a development plan for fisheries in East Greenland that will apply from 2024 to 2030. Peter Borg states that this plan is now being implemented in collaboration between the Department of Fisheries, Hunting, Agriculture and Self-Sustainability, the Steering Committee for the Development of Fisheries in East Greenland, fishermen, Greenland Fisheries and Hunting Control, KANUAPNA, Pinngortitaleriffik and Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq.

In connection with the development of the fishing industry in East Greenland, several initiatives will be launched, be it fishing gear, courses, ice reconnaissance, a separate management of cod in East Greenland and the start of fishing for redfish in East Greenland.

During the period that the development plan is in force, annual reports will be prepared, with the information made available via naalakkersuisut.gl, where in order to involve citizens there will also be a special topic on East Greenland on this website.

In connection with the development of fisheries in East Greenland, the second fisheries seminar was held in Tasiilaq at the end of April.

– Many initiatives and ideas need to be worked on, such as more courses for fishermen from East Greenland, collection of information from the fishery, information campaigns, more equipment and scientific studies near the coast.

– The most important thing is to have a good dialogue with fishermen from East Greenland and that there is coordination, which in 2024 and 2025 happened through several seminars, through filling out forms and the steering group for the development of fisheries in East Greenland, involving fishermen from East Greenland, the Municipality, KONFIFA, producers and KNAPK, informs Peter Borg.

Naalakkersuisoq informed Lars Poulsen that the Department of Fisheries, Hunting, Agriculture and Self-Sustainability is in ongoing dialogue with fishermen from East Greenland about needs in the fishery, about equipment and other issues.

Need for development of the airport in Kulusuk

Lars Poulsen will also have informed what plans they have as a result of the new fisheries law and to open up Greenland’s trade with foreign countries more.

According to the information that the Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Outlying Areas has received from Greenland Airports, there have been no inquiries from interested parties wishing to use Kulusuk Airport for the transport of fish abroad.

– If there is interest in this, Greenland Airports A/S is of course ready to have a dialogue. If there is interest in exporting through Kulusuk, there are several things to be aware of.

– If there are to be shipments to other producers, a security screening must be carried out. Also, if food is to be sent through Iceland, trained personnel will be needed for handling.

– In Kulusuk there is only a general security screening of luggage, and staff must also receive further training, says Peter Borg.

Since there is no requirement for security screening of freight internet in Greenland, it is possible to send fish to Nuuk, the answer states, among other things.
