New flight connections triple the number of guests at Hotel Hans Egede
The new international routes from SAS and United Airlines in particular have been crucial for the tripling, but cruise tourism also plays a role.
Previously, Hotel Hans Egede – including HHE Express and their hotel apartments with a total of 280 rooms – has been busiest in the spring and autumn with business travelers staying overnight. But a busy summer awaits the hotel.
Previously,
– Right now we are looking towards a summer season that is more than doubled – yes, it will probably end up tripling compared to our normal summer season. Normally, the summer season, from mid-June to mid-August, has never been the big seller in terms of hotel nights in Nuuk, but that is changing significantly this year, says CEO of Hotel Hans Egede A/S, Jørgen S. Bay-Kastrup, a little over a week before United Airlines’ first flight lands in Nuuk from Newark/New York.
FLERE RUTEFLYVNINGER
In addition to Air Greenland’s regular route connection between Copenhagen and Nuuk, SAS and United Airlines will begin their scheduled flights to Nuuk from June and throughout the autumn.

United Airlines’ Boeing 737 MAX 8 with approximately 166 passengers will arrive in Nuuk from Newark (New York) on June 14, with two weekly arrivals and departures (Tuesdays and Saturdays) onwards

– In addition to United Airlines, SAS is also starting two weekly flights from Copenhagen, just as Ruby Rejser has two weekly charter flights from Aalborg from mid-June to mid-September, says an expectant Jørgen S. Bay-Kastrup.
Trump effects
– There is no doubt that the total supply of airline seats also results in a significantly increased demand over the summer, says Jørgen S. Bay-Kastrup.
With the new international flight connections, the prices of airline tickets have fallen due to greater competition, but the US president’s interest in Greenland also has an effect, he estimates.
– Trump has provided invaluable marketing, so that everyone today knows where Greenland is – no matter how unpleasant the rhetoric is – and that may have encouraged a visit, says the hotel manager.
Nuuk as a hub
The new international routes from SAS and United Airlines in particular have been crucial, but the cruise industry and coastal tourism also play a role.
Many travelers to Ilulissat and other coastal destinations choose to spend a night or two in Nuuk – either before or after their onward journey – which is directly reflected in the hotel occupancy.
– However, we should not ignore the fact that Nuuk in 2025 and 2026 will benefit from the fact that everyone who goes on holiday on the coast – including the many who visit the largest summer destination, Ilulissat, every year – will have to go through Nuuk.
– We can see that many people choose to spend a night or two in Nuuk before and/or after the trip out of Nuuk, just to get Nuuk on the ‘map’.
– Just as cruise lines are slowly figuring out how to use Nuuk to exchange passengers and crew – which also means guests in the beds, says the hotel manager.
Nuuk’s development as a tourist town
The hotel director explains that Nuuk as a tourism destination is becoming more and more professional and expanding year by year. Among other things, Hotel Hans Egede has built the low-cost hotel HHE-Express as well as hotel apartments in the city center.
In addition, several tourist operators have emerged with experience products, which have helped to make the city more interesting as a holiday destination.
– The big challenge, like for most others in the industry – both in Greenland and many other places – is the lack of skilled personnel. I would like more young people to take up education in the industry, says Jørgen S. Bay-Kastrup.
