Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has been working on taking over a block of flats from the Self-Government of Paamiut. The project is being abandoned as the flats are now considered to be in too poor a condition to be worth renovating.

A project to take over a neglected and slightly dilapidated apartment block from the Self-Government is now abandoned by Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq.

    A projectAnnouncement

Back in 2023, the municipality had a review of the two blocks T and U in Paamiut carried out.

The blocks are built together and have been designated by the Self-Government for demolition, but the municipality’s inspection showed that Block T could be renovated with a view to establishing 23 apartments of varying sizes.

However, at a meeting of the municipality’s finance committee on June 3, the administration informed the committee that it was recommending building new homes instead of renovating Block T.

The administration writes to the committee, among other things, that in the dialogue with the Self-Government, it has “not been possible for the municipality to be allocated the funds that were allocated for demolition. Likewise, the current condition of the buildings as of April 2025 is so poor that renovation is not considered to make sense from an economic point of view.”

The committee decided that instead of the renovation, work should continue on the new construction of at least 14 apartments in Paamiut, as well as an additional 4 youth housing units in collaboration with the Self-Government.
