Service contracts under strict control

Efforts have been initiated to ensure that passenger transport companies comply with service contracts.

To ensure public passenger transport, the Self-Government has entered into a ten-year agreement on passenger transport with Air Greenland, Disko Line and Norland Air, except South Greenland, with effect from January 2021.

The agreements are divided into ten areas, which make it possible to offer transportation options at the highest price.

In a cooperation agreement between the Democrats, Inuit Ataqatigiit, Siumut and Atassut from after the Inatsisartut election this winter, an agreement was made to investigate the service contracts, among other things.

And that measures have been taken to ensure that the parties who have entered into service contracts for passenger transport meet their obligations under the service contracts, writes naalakkersuisoq for housing, infrastructure and outlying districts, Aqqaluaq B. Egede, Inuit Ataqatigiit, among other things, in a paragraph 37 response to member of Inatsisartut Anders Olsen, Siumut, about service contracts.

Strengthened supervision

During the election campaign for Inatsisartut this winter, there was a lot of focus on the major challenges with passenger transport throughout Greenland in recent years, and the then chairman of Naalakkersuisut and current Naalakkersuisoq for Finance and Taxes, Múte B. Egede, Inuit Ataqatigiit, said, among other things, that the service contracts should be reassessed.

And to tighten the requirements for compliance with the agreements, Aqqaluaq B. Egede states that there are plans to hold weekly meetings with employees about status.

– I have also held meetings with Air Greenland A/S and Disko Line A/S about their service contracts and asked them to work on improving them, he says.

There is a deadline for renegotiating the service contracts, but we haven’t gotten that far yet.

But there is an ongoing dialogue with those working to improve the service and identify the necessary initiatives.

– The Government of Greenland is very aware of the large social investments involved in the service contracts, and that these investments must ensure that citizens can travel around the country.

– Therefore, there is monitoring of contracts and service contracts operated by providers, says naalakkersuisoq for infrastructure.

With the approval of the Finance and Tax Committee of the Greenland Government, the Greenland Government may purchase additional services when necessary.

Maliina Ittuk er forsinket

Anders Olsen also wanted to know if Disko Line’s new passenger ship Maliina Ittuk will sail to various locations in South Greenland.

According to Disko Line, Maliina Ittuk is experiencing technical problems and is currently in Frederikshavn, Denmark, and the ship is not expected to sail passengers in South Greenland until around August 1. Maliina Ittuk is intended as a passenger ship between Qaqortoq, Narsaq and Narsarsuaq. Experience from previous years shows that there are too few passengers to Nanortalik, and therefore there are no plans for Maliina Ittuk to sail regularly to Nanortalik at this time, says Aqqaluaq B. Egede.

However, if Disko Line’s Targa cannot sail to Nanortalik due to wind, weather or ice, Disko Line states that Maliina Ittuk is always ready to sail to Nanortalik. Likewise, the quays in Narsarmijit and Aappilattoq are too small for Maliina Ittuk to sail to these settlements.
