Iran’s foreign minister accuses US of betraying diplomacy

Iran has a "right to self-defense", says foreign minister at press conference after US attack.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, says at a press conference in Istanbul that the “door of diplomacy” should always be open, but right now it is not.

This is what the media outlet Al Jazeera writes on Sunday.

On Sunday night Danish time, the United States attacked three Iranian nuclear facilities.

It was the first time that the United States became directly involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran.

Iran and the United States were in negotiations for months about the Iranian nuclear program, which Iran says has peaceful purposes, although many countries seriously doubt it.

Araghchi accuses the US of having “betrayed” diplomacy.

    – The door of diplomacy should always be open, but that is not the case right now, says Araghchi.

    – My country has been under attack, and we must respond based on our legitimate right to self-defense.

    The language of threats

He further says that he will go to Moscow this afternoon to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. The two will have “serious” discussions there.

The two countries have a strategic partnership.

The Iranian Foreign Minister’s statements about the possibilities for diplomacy come after the EU and Britain, among others, have called for a diplomatic solution.

    – The US showed that they have no respect for international law. They only understand the language of power and threats, Araghchi said, according to the Reuters news agency.

He has previously written on the social media X that both the US and Israel have “blown” diplomatic efforts into “air” with their attacks.

US President Donald Trump has warned Iran not to retaliate.

He has said that the United States can hit more targets in Iran if the United States wants to.
