Wet and windy weather is moving across the country these days – but a warm breeze awaits later in the week.

A low pressure area in Southwest Greenland is bringing both wind and rain these days. Rain is falling all the way from Uummannaq down to Paamiut – and it will continue for a while.

The unstable summer weather is due to warm air blowing up over West Greenland and meeting cold air from Canada, which currently appears to be gaining the upper hand. It is precisely this collision that is creating all the precipitation we are seeing now, says meteorologist at DMI in Nuuk Jens Lindskjold.

But even though you might be looking out the window right now and sighing over the rain and debris, there’s good reason to keep your spirits up – because luckily it won’t last. We’ll just have to get through today.

Sun and silence on the way

When we wake up on Wednesday morning, completely different weather awaits us.

    – Quietly and steadily during Wednesday the rain stops, the sun breaks out, and the weather becomes calm. And this continues into the weekend, says Jens Lindskjold.

And even though the thermometer may not be showing the highest temperatures, there’s no reason to be fooled. It will still feel warm in the sun, and with the fresh air and clear weather, it’s a good idea to get outside and enjoy the days.

    – We are on the cool side of the major weather patterns, but we shouldn’t be sad about that – because it actually gives us the best summer weather in Greenland. We get rid of the humidity, and the sun is allowed to shine.

And the good weather we are about to encounter does not only call for sunny days outside. Air traffic, which has been cancelled these days due to the wind, can also look forward to much calmer weather, says Jens Lindskjold.

    A classic summer awaits

Jens Lindskjold cannot say what the weather will be like for the rest of the summer, but many suggest a completely normal Greenlandic summer with alternating periods of sun and dry weather – and periods of rain.

    – It will always be like that. Summer is made up of good weeks and weeks that are not so good.

But right now there is good reason to be happy – because first and foremost we can look forward to a sunny week 28. At least from Wednesday.
