SISA Pension Acquires Stake in Polar Seafood Greenland A/S

On October 1, 2025, SISA Pension will officially become a co-owner of Polar Seafood Greenland A/S, purchasing five percent of the company’s shares. With this acquisition, SISA steps in as the first external shareholder in the history of Greenland’s largest privately owned enterprise.

Until now, Polar Seafood was wholly owned by Miki Brøns and Laila and Bent Friis-Salling. The addition of SISA, which represents over 44,000 pension savers, marks a significant milestone, indicating a new chapter for both the pension fund and the company.

In a press release, SISA articulated its rationale behind the investment: “This move goes beyond financial returns; it’s about fortifying Greenlandic jobs, bolstering the nation’s pivotal industry, and fostering a sense of ownership among our members.” Jess G. Berthelsen, the chairman of the board at SISA Pension, expressed pride in partnering with Polar Seafood, emphasizing its critical role in Greenland’s fishing sector.

Before finalizing the transaction, SISA’s director, Søren Schock Petersen, confirmed that a comprehensive investigation was conducted on Polar Seafood. “Our analysis concluded that the anticipated return aligns appropriately with the associated risks,” he stated, highlighting SISA’s commitment to judiciously managing the funds of its members.

Polar Seafood Greenland reported a profit of DKK 119 million in 2024. Under the stewardship of owners Miki Brøns and Bent Friis-Salling, the company remains optimistic about its future. Bent Friis-Salling welcomed SISA as a new partner, stating, “We are excited to have SISA on board. This partnership aligns with our commitment to the new Fisheries Act, promoting shared access to our communal resources.” He added that they look forward to collaborating with an organization that reflects their values and vision for a vibrant and sustainable Greenlandic fishery.

As SISA prepares to gradually increase its holdings in Polar Seafood, both parties anticipate that this partnership will lead to continued growth and innovation within Greenland’s fishing industry.
