Uneasy Residents Voice Concerns Over Roadwork at Eqalugalinnguit

As the municipality of Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq embarks on a significant project to install traffic lights on the bustling stretch of Eqalugalinnguit, local residents are expressing their frustrations. The ongoing construction, set to continue until August 2026, has prompted complaints about excessive noise and disruption, particularly during early mornings, late evenings, and weekends. Many residents are also taken aback by the lack of prior consultation regarding the roadwork.

Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq is collaborating with Nukissiorfiit and Tusass to transform the previously existing roundabout into a light-regulated intersection. However, the initiative has drawn ire from locals, who describe the drilling and blasting as overwhelmingly intrusive.

    A Central Bottleneck

The traffic planner for the Administration for Construction and Environment, Emil Skat Vejleskov, emphasizes that this roadwork addresses a vital bottleneck on one of the city’s busiest routes. “The introduction of traffic lights aims to enhance traffic flow for motorists, ensure safer crossings for pedestrians—especially school children—and create a dedicated bus lane,” he explains. Given the area’s heavy congestion, the administration is keen to expedite construction while minimizing disruption.

While some residents have voiced their discontent over the noise levels—claiming work continues from dawn to dusk, even on weekends—Vejleskov defends the scheduling decisions. “To lessen the impact on traffic, we deliberately perform significant tasks during times of lower vehicle volume,” he notes, adding that some operations are conducted on Saturdays between 7:30 AM and 2 PM, with Sunday work being an exception rather than the rule.

Despite the push for greater communication, Vejleskov acknowledges that no separate community consultation has been held regarding the traffic light project itself. “However,” he states, “there is an ongoing neighborhood discussion concerning the establishment of a new playground at Lake Annersuaq to compensate for the inclusion of part of the outdoor area of the Annersuaq daycare center in the road widening.”

Located adjacent to the construction site, Annersuaq daycare serves 64 children and stands to benefit from the proposed playground initiative.

    The Road Ahead

The main contractor for this project is Nuuk Entreprenøren, along with Brøndum and FJ-EL, who handle the essential wiring. This project involves widening the road to accommodate turning lanes, in addition to relocating water, electricity, and telecommunications lines. A concrete guardrail is also in place to ensure safety during the intensive digging and blasting phases.

As the construction progresses, local residents hope for measures that will make the transition smoother and less disruptive to their daily lives. The community continues to await clearer communication from the municipality about the trajectory of these significant changes.
