Cod and Halibut Fishing Licenses Extended Until January 2026
In a recent announcement, Naalakkersuisut revealed that a backlog has developed in the application waiting list for fishing licenses. Consequently, holders of licenses for inshore Olympic fishing are now permitted to continue fishing for cod and halibut using their 2025 licenses until January 31, 2026.
This decision, communicated by the Ministry of Fisheries, Catching, Agriculture, and Self-Sufficiency, comes amidst significant pressure within the department. Katrine Kærgaard, the head of the fisheries department, explained that a combination of high demand and illness among staff members has contributed to the slow processing of Olympic fishing applications, prompting officials to prioritize these requests.
To note, the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for coastal fisheries will be set by Naalakkersuisut on December 11, 2025. As such, anglers can look forward to additional opportunities in the coming months.
