Press Conference Announcement from Government Chairman
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the Chairman of Naalakkersuisut, will hold a press conference today at 11:00 AM. Joining him will be Múte B. Egede, the Minister of Taxes and Finances. The press release states that the topic will focus on “the status of the situation.”

A Tumultuous Week
Last Wednesday’s press conference saw Vice-Chairman Múte B. Egede stepping up to address the media, but a great deal has transpired since then. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Vivan Motzfeldt, has been busy in Washington, engaging with notable figures, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke also joined these discussions.
On the heels of her meetings in Washington, Motzfeldt visited NATO in Brussels yesterday, accompanied by Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen. Together, they proposed a more permanent NATO presence in Greenland and the Arctic to NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Although recent military exercises, dubbed “Arctic Endurance,” have included forces from multiple NATO nations operating in Greenland, it remains a Danish-led initiative and not an official NATO mission.
Over the weekend, thousands rallied in Greenland and Denmark, with demonstrations also taking place in Nunavut, Canada, expressing solidarity with Greenland.
During these protests, former President Trump made headlines on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he issued threats of punitive tariffs despite previously advocating for enhanced security in the Arctic— a rationale for his interest in Greenland. He announced plans to impose a 10% tariff on countries contributing to the military buildup in Greenland, escalating to 25% by June 1st.
“The tariff will remain in effect until an agreement is reached regarding the American ‘acquisition’ of Greenland,” he stated.
Upcoming Session in Davos
Today marks the commencement of the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Trump is scheduled to deliver a speech there tomorrow, where he has indicated he will revisit the topic of Greenland’s purchase.
Denmark, along with seven other nations—France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Finland—has collectively reaffirmed their support for the sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland. The EU has also voiced its backing.
Moreover, Trump has not shied away from suggesting the potential use of military force regarding Greenland.
