Kangerlussuaq Flight Plans Hit a Snag
Kangerlussuaq’s eagerly anticipated direct flights from Copenhagen will have to wait. Initially set to launch next week with flights scheduled every Tuesday until October 20, 2026, the service has been postponed until March due to disappointing ticket sales for the inaugural departures.
“The direct route between Copenhagen and Kangerlussuaq was planned to commence on February 10. However, the low demand for flights on that date, and subsequently on February 17 and 24, led us to make this decision,” explained Inga Dora Guðmundsdottir Markussen, Air Greenland’s Director of Sustainability and Communication. “We have opted to consolidate operations, offering travelers connections via Nuuk to reach Kangerlussuaq instead.”
Markussen emphasized the adjustment in service to address demand levels, stating, “We are canceling direct flights between Copenhagen and Kangerlussuaq in February and encouraging passengers to fly through Nuuk.”
A Partnership for Adventure
The planned direct flights are the result of a collaboration between Air Greenland and Albatros Arctic Circle, which operates a hotel and offers a variety of tours and excursions in the region.
In 2025, Air Greenland and Albatros agreed to operate two weekly flights from March 17 to October 16, extending the journey from Kangerlussuaq to Nuuk and returning via Kangerlussuaq. This year, based on feedback from last summer’s peak season, the route has been simplified to a single weekly flight every Tuesday, without the continued service to Nuuk.
Mogens Jensen, the acting commercial director of the Air Greenland group, noted the strategic nature of this schedule. “The modified timetable caters to both tourism and local travel needs. The direct Tuesday flight from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, coupled with coordinated domestic connections, streamlines travel across the country. It’s a valuable addition for those heading to Kangerlussuaq, Sisimiut, and Ilulissat, as it enhances the overall travel experience.”
Flights on this route are operated by Jettime, utilizing a Boeing 737-800, accommodating up to 189 passengers.
