Towering Ambitions: Greenlandic/American Partnership Aims for World’s Largest AI Data Center

In a move that could reshape the landscape of artificial intelligence infrastructure, Svend Hardenberg announced a groundbreaking partnership between his company, the Inuit Development Company, and the American firm AmForge Corporation. The ambitious plan: to construct and operate what might soon become the world’s largest AI data center.

    A Promising Partnership

The collaboration was formalized in Kangerlussuaq, where Hardenberg and AmForge’s co-founder and CEO, Dan Whaley, put pen to paper, signaling the start of a bold venture. Both companies are set to embark on a phased implementation strategy focused on energy production, data center construction, and the establishment of an undersea data cable.

The facility promises to leverage one of the largest sustainable hydropower projects, ensuring that the data center operates on renewable energy. This focus on sustainability aims to support the emerging demands of hyperscale AI data centers.

    Economic Opportunities for Greenland

Beyond its technological ambitions, the partnership also seeks to create local job opportunities in Qeqqata Kommunia, which could bring substantial long-term economic benefits to Greenland. Whaley remarked on the significance of this project, stating, “AI is here and growing fast. The more we can harness sustainable energy and natural cooling, the better. Greenland’s unique position makes it an ideal location, and we are excited to team up with Svend and the Inuit Development Company to realize this vision.”

    Funding Concerns

While the signing of the letter of intent was celebrated as a pivotal moment for sustainable development in Greenland, specifics about the project’s financing remain unclear. Established by Hardenberg in 2021 with an initial capital of DKK 200,000, the Inuit Development Company has seen its equity decrease to DKK 93,395, as per the latest accounts for 2024.

    AmForge’s Expertise

Founded over 70 years ago, AmForge Corporation positions itself as a key player in providing innovative solutions for the aerospace, defense, and energy sectors. Their commitment to customer service, engineering excellence, and production capabilities is reflected in their specialization in advanced materials, including titanium and nickel-based superalloys.

This partnership between Greenland and the American company represents a bold step into the future of AI, promising not only to advance technology but also to bolster local economies through sustainable practices. As the details unfold, the eyes of the world will be watching this remarkable endeavor.
