Major Enhancement to Fishing Subsidies Proposed by Naalakkersuisut for Qaanaaq and East Greenland
In a move aimed at revitalizing the fishing industry in the outer districts, Naalakkersuisut has unveiled plans for substantial improvements to the subsidy scheme for both new and existing fishing vessels. This initiative is central to an executive order that is currently under consultation.
The proposed changes mark a significant shift from existing legislation, with enhancements tailored to accommodate various vessel sizes:

For vessels ranging from 6 to 9.5 meters in length: The subsidy for fishing species other than shrimp is set to rise dramatically, allowing fishermen to receive up to 85% of the vessel’s total acquisition cost, a considerable increase from the standard 40%.

For vessels over 9.5 meters: Fishermen could see subsidies reaching up to 60% of the total acquisition cost, again a jump from the typical 40%.
Additionally, the new plan introduces a requirement for fishermen to contribute a smaller share of the costs. Under the proposed regulations, those acquiring vessels in the 6 to 9.5-meter category will now only need to cover 2% of the total cost, while those purchasing larger vessels will be responsible for 5%. Previously, the fisherman’s contribution was set at 10%.
The hearing period for these proposals will close on March 9, offering stakeholders a chance to voice their opinions on this transformative initiative for the region’s fishing community.
