Direct Flights to Ilulissat: A New Era for Air Greenland

In an exciting development for travelers, Air Greenland has announced a new weekly direct flight from Ilulissat to Copenhagen, set to launch on Wednesday, October 29, 2026. This long-awaited service follows the anticipated opening of the new airport in Ilulissat at the end of 2026.

The flight will kick off with a special journey aboard the Atlantic aircraft Tuukkaq, which was spotted stationed on the runway in Nuuk ahead of this momentous occasion.

With this new route, Air Greenland opens the door to greater connectivity, making North Greenland more accessible to both tourists and business travelers. As part of its winter schedule, the airline has highlighted the importance of connecting Ilulissat and Copenhagen directly, a move that reinforces its commitment to enhancing travel options.

Jacob Nitter Sørensen, Air Greenland’s director, expressed enthusiasm about the new route, stating, “This enhancement strengthens accessibility to North Greenland, ensuring more direct connections for travelers while supporting both tourism and commerce.”

    Seasonal Adjustments to Flight Offerings

Initially, the route will see one direct flight each Wednesday. However, in response to seasonal travel demands, Air Greenland plans to ramp up flights to twice a week during peak periods, specifically around Christmas and New Year, as well as throughout the winter tourist season from March 1 to March 27, 2027.

On days when there is no direct flight, travelers can still connect to Copenhagen via Nuuk, with connections available from Ilulissat on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

A Broader Commitment to Air Travel

In addition to the new Ilulissat connection, Air Greenland is eager to announce that its forthcoming Airbus A320neo, aptly named Unaaq, will also service the route between Nuuk and Copenhagen. This aircraft promises to enhance the overall travel experience as it will eventually take over operations for the Ilulissat-Copenhagen flights as well.

As the new winter schedule unfolds, further details regarding routes and schedules will soon be made available on Air Greenland’s website, providing travelers with ample options for exploring North Greenland and beyond.

This new chapter for Air Greenland not only promises to bolster local tourism but also to strengthen the economic connections that are vital for the region’s growth.
