As NÛK Handball Starz embarks on an inspiring journey to the Faroe Islands for the Eydnucup 2026 this Easter, the emphasis is not on winning but on connection. This trip is designed to foster camaraderie among young athletes and provide a chance to explore the world beyond their familiar surroundings.
Jørgen Isak Olsen, the dedicated coach of the Lykkeliga team, emphasizes that this initiative is particularly impactful for children with special needs, who now have an opportunity to engage in a sport they love while building community. “These children have unique challenges—some with Down’s Syndrome may feel overwhelmed in large crowds, while others may have ADHD,” he explains. “It’s heartening for them to meet peers on similar journeys.”
On Saturday, April 4, the team will participate in a spirited event in Torshavn, where they’ll join competitors from Greenland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Faroe Islands. This gathering promises not just competition but a celebration of community through sport.
Excitement for the Gala
Among the excited participants is 12-year-old Elvira, who is eagerly anticipating the gala party scheduled for that evening. Her mother, Rikke Frederiksen, shares the excitement: “The gala is a significant occasion for Elvira; the first thing she packed was her dress for the evening,” Rikke notes. “Playing as part of the national team and representing Greenland is a monumental experience for her.”
Elvira faces her own challenges, dealing with a rare chromosomal defect, yet when the children gather to play, disabilities fade into the background. “What’s crucial about this team is that it doesn’t matter which category you fit into. If you’re happy to be there and eager to participate, you’re welcome,” Rikke emphasizes.
Community Comes First
While competition is on the agenda for Saturday, the team will also dedicate time to explore the stunning landscapes of the Faroe Islands—a vital aspect of their trip. The matches against local teams will prioritize cooperation over competition. “The focus will be on building connections and sharing experiences,” Jørgen notes. “At the end of the day, it’s less about who scores more; in the spirit of Lykkeliga, everyone is a winner.”
Rikke echoes this sentiment: “The essence of this experience lies in the joy of community through handball. The actual scoreline, the level of play—these details are secondary. What matters most is participation, in whatever form that takes.”
Previously, NÛK Handball Starz has taken part in Lykkeliga gatherings in Herning, bolstered by generous support from the Ladies Circle, the Greenland Sports Association, and the local Nuuk community. This trip continues the legacy of inclusivity and shared joy that defines the Lykkeliga movement.
