Wildfire in Nanortalik Brought Under Control, Community Rallies to Assist
A wildfire that ignited in Nanortalik on Tuesday afternoon has now been contained, according to Thorvald Madsen, the emergency response inspector.
While firefighters have made significant progress, smoke continues to rise from the steep mountain slopes, indicating that the blaze has not been entirely extinguished. “We are currently waiting for a decision from my supervisor in Qaqortoq about whether we can deploy helicopters for the final phase of extinguishing the fire,” Madsen explained. He noted the challenging terrain on Qaqqarsuasik—a steep slope that makes ground access difficult.
Despite the lingering smoke, Madsen reassured the community that the fire is now under control and poses no immediate threat of spreading. “As of now, the wind direction ensures that the smoke won’t affect the residents of Nanortalik. However, we will provide updates should the wind shift and impact the area,” he added.
Community Effort
From the moment the fire broke out around 3 PM on Tuesday until midnight, a dedicated team of 19 firefighters, along with 12 local volunteers, tirelessly worked to manage the situation. “By midnight, we had gained control of the fire, with only the steep slope left to tackle,” Madsen stated.
Local businesses also played a vital role in the firefighting efforts—Brugseni and Kiosk Ajaaja provided essential supplies, while the local hotel ensured that firefighters and volunteers were well-fed and hydrated throughout their long hours of service. “I am immensely grateful for the support from the locals. It truly meant a lot to have refreshments like soda and cake provided for everyone involved,” Madsen remarked.
A Potentially Dangerous Situation
With wind speeds reaching between 18 to 20 meters per second on Tuesday, conditions were ripe for rapid fire spread. “The winds up on the mountain were fierce, allowing the fire to advance quickly. Thankfully, we were able to bring it under control,” Madsen reflected.
Firefighters utilized dinghies and pumps to combat the flames effectively. “We operated two dinghies to shuttle back and forth and engaged in a pumping operation from the sea to douse the fire,” he explained, highlighting the resourceful measures taken during the operation.
Thanks to the concerted efforts of both emergency personnel and the community, a potentially devastating situation was managed with remarkable speed and cooperation.
