Yesterday, KNR published an article highlighting the limited trading options in Uummannaq stemming from the recent fire at Nukissiorfiit, which has disrupted the electricity supply to the area.
Local resident John Møller pointed out a significant issue: the ATMs are non-operational due to the loss of connection. “It’s a real problem,” he noted, “since local shops can only accept cash payments.”
Fortunately, Tussas announced yesterday morning that an emergency generator had succeeded in keeping a mobile mast operational, restoring a vital connection.
### Challenges at Pilersuisoq
On their Facebook page, Pilersuisoq Uummannaq confirmed the impact of the outages, stating that both connectivity and electricity issues had rendered the ATMs inoperative. However, they offered a temporary solution to some of the challenges residents face.
For those who have a Visa or Dankort card, transactions can still be processed through a Dankort terminal, even if it isn’t connected to the network. Unfortunately, this option isn’t available for customers using Mastercard Debit or Akiliut cards. To accommodate the community’s needs, the store’s office stayed open until 4 p.m. yesterday to assist residents in withdrawing cash.
### Current Situation
Today, Juliane Henningsen Heilmann, the HR Director at KNI, reported that conditions for card payments in Uummannaq remain consistent with those of yesterday. The organization continues to work alongside village offices to help residents access cash.
“We restored power to the shop yesterday morning and are keeping the larger store open while the convenience store remains closed,” Heilmann explained. She added that Pilersuisoq has successfully maintained the integrity of frozen goods, ensuring they have not suffered any damage. “We’ve fortunately dodged a bullet on that front,” she remarked.
