Exploring Greenland: The Jensen Family’s Adventure

Helle and Kurt Jensen, a married couple from Vestbjerg near Aalborg, along with their sons Stig and Steen, and daughter-in-law Alma Houen, are embarking on an exciting journey to discover the world.

“We started our adventures a few years ago in Australia, followed by a trip to South Africa last year. This year, we were considering the USA,” Helle Jensen reflects.

However, the political climate in the United States under President Trump gave them pause. “You’d have to be both deaf and blind not to notice how things are unfolding there,” she says. “We chose not to be part of that, so we decided to look elsewhere.”

That conversation led them to Greenland, a destination none of them had previously visited. “When we heard about the new direct flights from Aalborg to Nuuk, it felt like the right choice,” she explains while seated on an Airseven flight, which was operating on behalf of Air Greenland.

“Oddly enough, it’s Trump’s actions that brought us to Greenland. If it weren’t for him, we might have been flying to the U.S. right now.”

    Avoiding the Group Travel Trap

The Jensens are not fans of group travel and prefer to journey outside of school holiday periods. “We booked our trip and excursions through Ruby Rejser, but we want to explore without a tour guide. We usually manage just fine on our own, and we believe we can do the same in Greenland,” Helle shares.

They are diving headfirst into this adventure. “If this is going to be our first—and possibly only—big trip, we’re going all out. We’re not looking for any narrow escapes!” she laughs.

Their plans include a stay at Hotel Hans Egede in Nuuk before heading out for a unique glamping experience in the fjord. “We’re even going fishing for redfish and plan to enjoy those fresh catches,” she adds.

After spending a few days in Nuuk, the Jensen family will continue to Ilulissat, eager to witness the breathtaking Isfjorden. They’ve planned helicopter tours and whale-watching excursions. “We can’t wait! We’re excited to see Greenland, especially since it has been in the news so much lately. It’ll be fascinating,” Helle expresses, admitting she and her family are stepping into this experience largely blind. “Honestly, we don’t know what to expect. We don’t know anyone from Greenland, nor have we ever worked there.”

    Preparing for Prices

One thing they have learned, however, is that beer and spirits come at a premium in Greenland. “We’ve come prepared with a full supply in our suitcases! It is a holiday after all, and we intend to have a great time—enjoying a little in moderation,” Helle says.

“We’re not overly worried about the costs. When you look at the big picture, it’s a small fraction of the entire trip. And we plan to enjoy a nice bottle of wine during our seafood meals,” she adds, confident in their culinary plans. “We may not know much about Greenland, but we’ve heard about its renowned prawns and fish, and that will definitely be part of our experience.”

    A Slight Detour

Regrettably, the Jensen family’s grand plans took an unexpected turn. Due to adverse weather, they were unable to reach Ilulissat. “Of course, we are disappointed, but we are content nonetheless. The experience was still incredible, particularly the warm hospitality of the Greenlandic people. Everyone was so friendly, and that’s something truly special about Greenland,” Helle reflects.

“While we didn’t get to visit Ilulissat this time, we understand that weather is unpredictable. We have to accept that,” she acknowledges. With a sense of optimism, Helle reveals, “We’re already planning a return trip next year. It wasn’t our initial plan, but we’re hungry for more of this beautiful place, and we still want to go to Ilulissat. So, you haven’t seen the last of us yet!” She grins, clearly excited for the adventures that lie ahead.
