New Infrastructure Marks a Milestone for Nuuk’s Port Expansion
The long-awaited expansion of Nuuk’s port is officially underway, beginning with a symbolic blast that took place Tuesday afternoon. The project will extend the port by approximately 350 meters, with plans to complete the new berths by November 2028. This crucial development aims to accommodate trawlers, the Norwegian Armed Forces, and various other vessels.
Iddimanngiiu Jensen Bianco, the Minister for Infrastructure, presided over the first blast alongside KJ Greenland’s blasting manager, marking a momentous occasion for the city. As the inaugural charge detonated, spectators witnessed not just a physical transformation of the landscape, but also a new chapter in Nuuk’s infrastructural development.
“This port expansion is a pivotal project for us,” remarked John Rasmussen, the director of Sikuki Nuuk Harbour, who delivered an enthusiastic speech before the blast. “By its completion in November 2028, we will have a port that truly reflects the aspirations of our growing city.”
The need for an extended port has been pressing. A previous tender in 2024 was canceled due to excessive bids, but optimism returned in April when KJ Greenland was awarded the contract. The weather during the initial blasting was nearly ideal, setting a positive tone for the future of the port.
The expansion will feature 200 meters dedicated to trawlers and a further 150 meters designated as a dual-use quay, primarily for defense vessels. Among the noteworthy figures present was Bent Salling, co-owner and director of Polar Seafood, who emphasized the significance of the new quay.
“This development is essential for the country’s progress,” Salling said. “Not only does it promise immediate benefits for Nuuk, but it also holds hope for advancements across the nation.” He expressed relief that the new quay will alleviate congestion at the current port, which is often overwhelmed by the combined traffic of cruise ships and fishing vessels.
Naalakkersuisoq, Iddimanngiiu Jensen Bianco, spoke passionately about how this groundbreaking event signifies the culmination of years of planning. “Today, our dreams and strategies emerge from paper and meetings into tangible reality,” he stated, underscoring the collective efforts that have brought this ambitious plan to fruition.
Karl Jensen, chairman of KJ Greenland, echoed this sentiment, indicating that preparations are already in full swing. “We have the personnel and machinery ready to go. The project is officially in motion,” he affirmed.
With the port expansion set to transform Nuuk’s logistical capabilities, the entire community eagerly awaits the enhanced opportunities that lie ahead. As plans materialize, this infrastructure upgrade promises to vitalize not just the local economy, but also to strengthen Greenland’s standing on the global stage.
